Robert Field (Xena editor)

Pasadena, California: 6 May, 2001

Rob arrived on stage and immediately announced that he didn't have much of anything planned for the day's show: no examples of pre-and-post editing, no prepared speeches about how editing works. He just got right into getting a chant started for blooper tapes.

He did answer a couple of quick questions: there's been talk about Xena DVDs, but nothing certain, and there isn't much additional footage to ever show to people, because the episodes pretty much use what they have. He also gave out autographed posters of Lucy Lawless to two cute little kids dressed as Xena and Gabrielle before he cued the video folks.

The first video he showed was a six-year retrospective, apparently done for the show. It was a rockin' montage of fights, jokes, kisses, and special effects. Creation could make a mint selling 'em.

Bloopers came next in the short time that was available. Some highlights that we saw:

  • The dog that's supposed to lick Ares a lot in Old Ares Had a Farm didn't always hit his marks; sometimes he wouldn't kiss Kevin Smith at all (despite Kevin making kissy noises to try to encourage it), and sometimes he'd kiss him in very inappropriate places.
  • We got to see an extended outtake from the big kiss in Return of the Valkyrie between Xena and Gabrielle... when after a highly emotional moment, Renee and Lucy both crack into giggles.
  • Odin threatening "DON'T MAKE ME KILL YOU" in about 12 takes, before Lucy finally gives a fake shiver and an "Ooo, I'm frightened!"
  • Xena and Gabrielle doing the chicken dance and giving floppy-handed waves to the camera.
